A $50,000 Lucid model seems very far-fetched right now. Bringing an entry-level car with such a low price compared to the others would turn the California-based carmaker into a mass-market EV manufacturer.
And this is where Lucid is going, as per the company’s CEO, Peter Rawlinson. The EV maker will roll out a high-volume family car that should hit the market sometime in 2024.

Lucid started out with the Air, which entered production in September 2021. The entry-level variant, the Pure, now starts at $77,400. That is the price for the single-motor, rear-wheel drive variant. At the opposite end of the lineup, there is the Lucid Air Sapphire, which cand be ordered for the price of three Tesla Model S Plaid examples. Its main opponent starts at $86,090.

Last month, Lucid debuted the Gravity, a Tesla Model X rival. But the Gravity electric crossover starts at around $80,000 before tax credits, while the Model X sells for $68,590.

The entry-level model that the manufacturer is planning should be way below this price, with the Lucid CEO claiming that it should start at around $50,000. The carmaker is probably just realizing that, in order to sell more cars, they need to go into the market of more affordable cars to expand the niche that it currently slots in.

In a conversation with Autocar, Peter Rawling says that the upcoming EV should rival be a competitor for the Model 3 and Model Y. "This is the first time I’ve ever said it: we're going to compete in that market – high-volume family car."

It is, though, going to be extremely complicated to rival the Model 3, which can even start below $30,000 if the customer is going for a car from the inventory and subtracts the federal and state-level tax credits.

There is no information on the powertrains or the battery pack that will equip the entry level model. But one thing is for sure. We are not going to see 1,234 horsepower (1,251 metric horsepower), figures that the Lucid Air Sapphire is credited with, or the EPA-rated 516 miles (840 kilometers) of range, similar to what the Lucid Air Dream R comes with. That is the longest-range electric car ever.

Therefore, the $50,000 Lucid is going to get lower figures in terms of performance and range both.

The CEO of the company did not mention the name of the upcoming model either. But we should expect it to drop sometime in 2024 as a 2025 model year. It remains to be seen if the entry-level vehicle of the Lucid portfolio will be able to take up such a responsibility of increasing the carmaker’s sales volumes.

Peter Rawling might know a thing or two about mass production. He was involved in the development of the Tesla Model S as a chief engineer for the Silicon Valley-based carmaker.
