For some people, a starting price of €175,000 might be crazy for a car such as the M5 but in India, prices are just as high as the headcount. The LCI M5 was just launched in the land of Gandhi and it has a starting price of Rs 1.35 crore in local currency, which translates into roughly €175,000 at today’s rates.
In US dollars, that adds up to $218,250 which is more than twice as much as the ‘regular American’ has to pay for an über-sedan such as this one. The tricky thing is that they are even assembled in India, unlike the ones sold elsewhere in the world.
That’s because BMW has a plant in the Asian country and it assembles the cars locally via CBU or Completely Built-Up kits that are put together in Chennai.
The cars themselves are not any different than in any other side of the world. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 makes the same 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque that are then sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed DCT gearbox or a manual 6-speed. Going from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.3 seconds and you can reach as high as 250 km/h (155 mph) until the speed limiter kicks in.
Indian customers will be glad to learn that standard features include Automatic Start/Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, Connected Drive, BMW Navigation Professional and Park Distance Control (PDC), Active M Differential, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Active Protection with Attentiveness Assistant and Active headrests (front) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist.
