Kovalainen: No More Number 2

With McLaren walking away with at least one title in 2008, there wasn't really much pressure on Heikki Kovalainen to succeed in his very first season with McLaren. Nevertheless, the Fin cannot be satisfied with what he's achieved throughout 2008, in spite of his very first Formula 1 win, at Hungaroring. And, if one considers the fact that Massa suffered an engine blow in the very last lap – while leading the race – the win wasn't really a result of his great race strategy.

However, with McLaren clearly aiming for their first constructors' title in 11 years next season, Heikki must really upper his game in order to retain his seat for 2010. Ron Dennis' team have already expressed their interest to sign either Nico Rosberg or Robert Kubica in the near future, so this should be the year Kova proves them wrong.

“I'm clearly not happy, certainly not with the results. I think the fact is I didn't make any big mistakes this year, but the season was quite difficult. We didn't finish all the races, there were also some things happening with me, and with my car technical issues that prevented us from a few results. But I think I'm much better prepared now for next year, and I'm looking forward to starting work for next year,” said the 27-year old Fin.

Kovalainen finished the last season in 7th place after failing to score any points in the season finale, at Interlagos. He scored almost half the points brought in by teammate Hamilton (53, as compared to the Brit's 98) but held a decisive role in 'gifting' Lewis the No 1 spot in the German Grand Prix, at Hockenheim.

He insisted that, with the same package and a high-performance car, he should have a shot at winning the title as teammate Hamilton.

“I think I can do a much better season next year. Thinking ahead, and suspecting that we're going to have a good car, then I will do the maximum to be in a position to have a better season. I think it is quite clear that we have the same chances”, added the Fin, sending a clear message to McLaren that he will not be taking the No 2 spot in the team anymore.
