Hyundai and Kia’s current crop of engines is more than adequate for the kind of cars they are selling, yet they are beginning to lag behind the competition, who use turbocharging throughout their range - the VW Golf, for instance, is now only available with turbocharged engines, as the German manufacturer has removed all naturally-aspirated units from the lineup.
Now, the Korean group has announced that they will be expanding the lineup of engine, with all-new turbocharged petrol and diesel units, yet they did not indicate on which markets they will be used, or when they will become available. Furthermore, back in 2010, they announced that they were working on a 10-speed automatic gearbox, for use in their more luxurious offerings - it was set to debut in 2014, so perhaps it will coincide with the introduction of the new engines.

The Hyundai Motor Group has already launched an eight-speed gearbox for the Hyundai Genesis and Equus, as well as a six-speed automatic, which is available as an option on pretty much any car they currently sell. All these ideas, including direct-injection, and primarily turbocharging, have the aim of reducing emissions and improving efficiency, thus boosting the appeal of their products.
