Jonathan Rea Does First MotoGP Test with Honda

World Superbike rider Jonathan Rea was given his first opportunity to take a MotoGP-spec Honda RCV212 to the track at the Sepang International Circuit. As Honda had planned a 3-day test at the Malaysian track, Rea was invited to get a first taste of a MotoGP machine alongside the Japanese maker's official test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi.

While a first for Rea, the test was also quite important for Honda in developing their 2011 MotoGP bike. Needless to say, the 23-year old rider from Northern Ireland was most grateful for the opportunity and tried to make the most of it, providing the Honda team will all the necessary feedback on the bike.

Today I had great fun learning a MotoGP bike and the Sepang circuit is impressive! My body is still not 100% and this is a pity, but I had a very good day with the HRC test team,” said the Honda Ten Kate World Superbike Team rider, who completed some 51 laps in his first day of testing. Two more days are to follow.

I spent almost all my career on production derived bikes, I just rode a 125 GP a few years ago, and today I had a good feeling riding the Honda RCV212. The bike feels very powerful, the engine revs higher than my CBR1000R and it is easy to change direction. I’d like to thank HRC and Honda Europe for this opportunity. I am looking forward for the next two days of testing.”

This 3-day test will be a great rehearsal for the two Honda riders, who will line up for Honda in the 8 Hours of Suzuka Endurance Race next year. The race in Japan is scheduled for July 25th, giving them plenty of time to prepare and test the Honda bikes fully.
