JCB to Use BorgWarner Turbocharging Technology

BorgWarner has been selected to supply wastegate and variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers for the off-highway vehicle maker JCB.

The components will be used for the new versions of the JCB Dieselmax 4.4 liter powerplants starting from 2012. Bearing the “Ecomax T4” name, the range includes a four cylinder inline mid-range diesel with power ratings ranging from 55 kW (75hp) to 130 kW (175 hp). This is destined for multiple applications such as agricultural, construction, and materials handling machinery.

The BorgWarner turbocharging technology will allow the new engine to meet the stringent Interim Tier 4/Stage III B regulations without requiring exhaust aftertreatment or Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). The regulations require a 50 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, compared to their predecessors.

"BorgWarner VTG turbochargers enable medium-and heavy-duty commercial diesel engines to comply with increasingly stringent global emissions standards while achieving better fuel economy," said Roger Wood, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems. "We are pleased to work with JCB Power Systems to develop optimal solutions to the challenges posed by Interim Tier 4 emissions standards."

The entry-level 55 kW unit will use a BorgWarner fixed geometry turbocharger with integral boost control, but the higher rating JCB will use BorgWarner’s new BV55 VTG turbocharger. This uses high durability brushless actuator, a robustdesign and offers high reliability. It also allows the engine to offer a good level of performance.

BorgWarner engineers worked closely with JCB Power Systems to optimize the charge air system design. BorgWarner's BV55 VTG turbocharger offers optimum low-speed engine torque characteristics and precise control of engine boost and EGR rate to reduce NOx and particulate matter emissions,” stated the press release.
