For some wealthy owners, yachts are just luxury toys that come and go; for others, they become a life-changing experience. That's the case for Lenny Recanati, and the only yacht he has owned so far is the beautiful Vivid. The Israeli entrepreneur enjoyed his sailing yacht to the fullest and held on to it for two decades, even though he would end up selling it for less than what he invested into its first refit.
Vivid is a 23-year-old Dutch sailing yacht that has kept its original name and only had two owners prior to this recent sale. New York-born Israeli millionaire Lenny Recanati, owner of a winery and a professional basketball team in Israel, purchased the Jongert vessel from the original years, only a few years after its 2001 debut.
Vivid would not be one of those luxury toys that are barely used and hardly appreciated. By 2017, it had logged more than 130,000 miles (209,000 km), which included two full trips around the world. In 12 years, this passionate yacht owner had sailed more and seen more than others do in a lifetime.
It was more than exploring the world in a deeply personal way; it was also about the unique experience of sailing – in a 2017 interview, Recanati talked about the thrilling experience of being behind the wheel, equally exciting as just turning off the engine and allowing the wind to take over.
This modern adventurer was willing to invest heavily in his travel companion. In 2012, the Jongert yacht completed a full refit at the original shipyard worth more than $2 million. It was further upgraded four years later, including new rigging. Designed by Doug Peterson and styled by Peter Sijm, the 26.5-meter (87-foot) Vivid was ready to accommodate up to six guests across three modern cabins with en-suites and full entertainment systems.
The sail system was designed to be easily handled by a small crew, and a single 257 HP Scania engine allows Vivid to hit more than ten knots. Apart from its reliability and performance, the Dutch vessel also offered a beautiful main salon with a dining area and an entertainment section, as well as a spacious open-air cockpit for relaxing moments al-fresco.
This proven world-cruiser is now embarking on a new journey after recently changing hands. The new lucky owner got his hands on a Dutch pedigree sailing yacht with a fantastic track record and at a very reasonable price – Vivid was last asking for €2.1 million ($2.2 million). Recanati had spent much more than that just to keep it in excellent shape throughout the decades, but in the end, it was all worth it because you can't put a price on memories and experiences.
