Back in March, Tetsuya Tada revealed that some of Toyota’s engineers were secretly working on sedan and shooting brake versions of the popular GT 86 coupe until company executives found them out and called off the projects.
At the same time, Tada said he’d like the GT 86 to “become a family like what BMW has done with the Mini family”. Well, Tada’s dream could become reality in the near future, as a source close to Toyota told Motoring Australia that the Japanese manufacturer green-lighted a GT 86-based sedan.

No actual details have been revealed, but word has it the sedan will be powered by the same 200 HP 2.0-liter boxer engine, but use a 100mm longer wheelbase. The sporty sedan could also be fitted with the company’s brand new Hybrid R drive system that was showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Meanwhile, the convertible version of the GT 86 has been “delayed indefinitely, with no place in Toyota’s product plan in either 2014 or 2015”, according to a rumor that surfaced earlier this month.
