Driving a car to the back of a large truck can mean very bad news for the driver and the other passengers inside the vehicle. It’s probably one of the worst crashes a driver can get himself into, and it looks like the IIHS is trying really hard to make these impacts more survivable.
It’s obviously an enduring task that requires a lot of research, but, more importantly, it also requires for truck drivers to understand the need to fit their semi trailers with guards at the back in order to prevent passenger vehicles from sliding underneath. Unfortunately, the regulation is not very efficient, says the agency, who consequently started looking for ways to improve the results of such crashes.

As you might have guessed, the new feature coming from IIHS is part of the “Inside IIHS” series that gives drivers a glimpse of what the Institute does at its Vehicle Research Center. Scroll below to watch the “Understanding underride” video.
