Hyundai used to import pretty much all the parts it needs to build its cars in Europe, from South Korea, where their parts manufacturer Hyundai Mobis manufactured everything. That will not change completely any time soon, but now they have just opened their first European parts manufacturing operation.
The 3,170 square meter facility will begin production of brake modules. They process, plate and assemble calipers, drum brake assemblies and handbrakes. They have done this in order to be able to realistically reduce the asking price of their cars, or at least have a wider profit margin to play with, in case discounts are necessary, at some point.
A company executive was quoted as saying: “The new plant, ideally located in Europe for local production, will enable Hyundai Mobis cut logistics costs to boost cost competitiveness and rapidly adapt to local conditions and environments."
Hyundai Mobis, based in Changwon, South Gyengsang Province, has been shipping parts to Hyundai Motor in the Czech Republic and Kia Motors in Slovakia since the two factories opened, in 2007 and 2004 respectively.
