In case you’ve disassembled your Toyota VVTi engine to replace the piston rings or perform other repairing jobs, you’ll need to put all the parts back together correctly.
We’ll see here how to correctly assemble the pistons and connecting rods back together and place them in the right cylinders, a very important part if you don’t want you engine to blow up in pieces.

Normally, when starting to disassemble these components it’s good to mark them with a black highlighter pen or something similar so you’ll know which rod connects to which piston and then gets inserted in the right cylinder.

But if you skipped this pace, here are some hints on how you can find your way around:
  • All pistons and connecting rods are somehow numbered, starting from the timing chain or belt (front of the engine).
  • Numbering can be done with numbers or letters (1,2,3,4 or A,B,C,D)
  • The pistons and rods also have to be oriented to the front of the engine.
  • To put them the right way, pistons are usually marked with notches while the rods have painted dots at the bottom. All the markings must face the front of the engine.
  • Same story goes for the connecting rods' caps. Watch their numbering to coincide with the rods'.
  • The piston rings gaps have to be placed in opposing positions so the expanding combustion gasses will be better retained in the cylinder.
