Honda to Increase Production in Canada

Honda’s Canadian arm plans to expand its production capacity by adding a second production shift at one of its two factories, as Reuters reports.

The Alliston, Ontario production site’s output will be increased from 400 vehicles per day to 600 vehicles per day, a measure that will also lead to an addition 400 jobs.

The Honda Canada Manufacturing Plant 2, located next to Plant number 1,  produces the Honda Civic sedan, the Acura MDX SUV and the Acura ZDX crossover. The facility, which has been operational since 1998, represents a top asset for the company, as over 52 percent of Honda and Acura cars sold in Canada were manufactured there.

"We are pleased to be making this announcement as the Canadian economy continues to show signs of recovery," Manabu Nishimae, chief executive of Honda Canada, was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

An earlier report shows that the Japanese company will make important changes to its global business, as it plans to shift parts procurement from developed countries to emerging markets. The scheme aims to reduce costs by up to 10 percent.

When it will be debuted next year, it is expected to generate an annual savings of 1.08 billion, a figure that will be increased until 2013, when the program will be completed. By that time, Honda will have expanded its business relations with components suppliers from countries like China, India and Brazil.

In addition to that, the carmaker also wants to cut the number of facilities that supply each type of component from the current figure of 7-8 to 3-4, in order to make the process more efficient.
