Despite the disappointment of not being able to clinch a WRC win on his favorite surface, Hirvonen revealed that he has now figured out the way to challenge Loeb for championship wins in the future. In theory, the solution is quite simple: beat the man at his own game!
In an interview for autosport.com site, Hirvonen revealed that the only way to beat Loeb is by pushing himself to the very limit of rallying. Although constantly face to face with the risk of accidents and stage retirements, this driving style would put him on the same level with the Frenchman.
“I learned in Norway that there's only one way to do this and that's by making no mistakes and getting every single corner perfect. It's the only way. He does it and until I start doing it, I'm not going to beat him,” revealed Hirvonen, according to the aforementioned source.
“You are taking massive risks, you're risking everything in every corner - you know, driving absolutely as fast as you can through every bend. It's a fine line between getting it absolutely right and crashing off the road,” added the Ford works driver.
Although he only managed to come second, Hirvonen was satisfied with his driving in Norway, arguing that he did his best to challenge for the overall win. Not climbing on the highest step of the podium last weekend would eventually lead to an even sweeter win when he will get to beat his Citroen rival, thinks Hirvonen.
“I know that if I beat him, it's going to be a great feeling,” concluded Hirvonen.
