Heidfeld remained not signed for the 2010 season following BMW's withdrawal from the sport. As Peter Sauber's team is yet to secure an entry for the next season's championship, the German driver is still looking for a racing spot in order to continue his career in F1.
“I am in promising talks with several teams and confident of driving for a competitive racing team next season,” he told the German news agency DPA the other day. However, it seems that most drivers are saying the same thing when regarding their prospects for next season: they're discussing it with several teams, but no deal is on sight. When referring to a potential switch to Mercedes GP, the German driver admitted it would be "every driver's dream," as reported by the Sport Bild.
As for the Heidfeld – Mercedes GP rumors, these allegations started to appear in the media as soon as McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh – at the time, team principal for Mercedes' works team – spoke of him as being a better driver than people account him for. With the German marque switching factory support towards Brackley – and McLaren securing Jenson Button for next season – it would be only natural for Ross Brawn to consider Heidfeld for his future lineup.
Other than that, Heidfeld has remained maybe the only driver from the entire F1 paddock with a huge amount of experience behind him and still unsigned. Despite the fact that he has secured plenty of podiums throughout his career, the 32-year old driver is yet to win a race in the series.
