Guangzhou to Give License Plates Only Via Auctions and Dedicated Lottery

You may remember an older article in which we said that the Chinese city of Guangzhou, capital of the Guangdong province and home to some 11-million people, would be limiting the number of car registrations to 10,000 per month, in an effort to prevent future traffic congestion problems.
Now, according to chinadaily.com, city officials have decided the manner in which the 10,000 license plates will be given to the public. Of the total number, 5,000 plates will be given to the people via a lottery system, while the remaining 5,000 will be auctioned off, with the funds going towards the development of the city’s transport system, according to Xian Weixiong, director of the Guangzhou commission of transport.

This is a drastic measure which will undoubtably cause discord among the people of Guangzhou, as such measures are never taken lightly. Furthermore, the fact that half of the license plates will be auctioned off basically means that whoever has the most money will register as many cars as they want, thus promoting elitism and social inequality - but who’s looking...
