When it comes to virtual racing, you can’t get any closer to reality more than with what Gran Turismo 6 offers now. Well, minus the sound effects, but other than that, it seems spot on. Even FIA admitted it recently and will start a nice project next year in collaboration with Polyphony Digital to offer fans even more engagement.
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) just started a long-term partnership with Gran Turismo’s creator Polyphony Digital Inc., in order to certify and bring more content to the game as well as new online features.

FIA went to the game studios in Japan and, after an in-depth analysis, declared their approval on four tracks featured within the simulator, with Silverstone being one of them. The tracks are said to have been extremely well recreated after comparing the digital content with real world data, making Gran Turismo 6 the first FIA approved simulator.

The federation will continue to analyze and certify more tracks in the near future and that’s not all, as a new online feature has been announced to start next year.

"We are incredibly proud for Gran Turismo 6 to be officially certified by the governing body of world motor sport for in-game content,” said Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi. “As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo, this has to be the biggest accolade the game has received in its history. Our partnership with the FIA is a further step forward in our continued quest to bring the worlds of virtual and reality racing into a full circle."

There isn’t much information about the new online feature, but it has been described to offer “Gran Turismo players and motor sport fans the opportunity to engage with real motor sport”. From our point of view, this can only mean two things - either players will be able to compete against real racing drivers’ lap times/ghost car or in a championship similar to the Nissan GT Academy, where players compete against each other and winners get to actually race in the real thing.

Or maybe both, who knows...
