GP3 Drops Monaco from 2011 Calendar

Even though they initially confirmed Monaco as an official venue for the 2nd running edition of the GP3 Series, the championship's CEO Bruno Michel today confirmed that the GP2's feeder series will not see any track time in the Principality in 2011.

According to the GP3 boss, Monaco has been dropped from the 2011 calendar due to the fact that its paddock area lacks the necessary space to welcome the GP3 field.

What this means is that the 2011 edition of the GP3 Series will only be comprised of 8 rounds, as the organizers are not planning for any replacement of the Monaco race. All rounds will take place on European venues and will be supports races for the Formula 1 championship rounds on the Old Continent.

It is an unfortunate situation: we were really hoping to bring GP3 to Monaco this season and we all tried our hardest to make this happen, but the lack of space this year meant that we have to postpone. However, we are very eager to make it happen sooner or later,” confirmed Michel.

Instead of adding one more round to the calendar, the GP3 organizers have managed to increase the number of test days in 2011 to 12 with the addition of a 2-day test in June. However, the exact date and location of the test will be revealed at a later date.

Here's a look at the 2011 GP3 calendar in its final form:

Race 07-08 May - Istanbul
Race 21-22 May - Barcelona
Race 25-26 June - Valencia
Race 09-10 July - Silverstone
Race 23-24 July - Nurburgring
Race 30-31 July - Hungaroring
Race 27-28 August - Spa
Race 10-11 September - Monza
