The Chevrolet Malibu is extremely important for the automaker, as it’s a truly global product that will be sold in all major markets and 100 countries in total. The engine lineup is sure to be varied, but we’ll have to focus on the US model that will arrive in 2012.
General Motors today detailed the all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine that will take up the mantle from the 2.4-liter in the old model. the unit is expected to generate 190 horsepower and a peak torque of 180 lb-ft (250Nm) when the car arrives in the spring of next year. This represents a relatively substantial increase in power, but economy was also a focus.
The 2013 Malibu will get an estimated highway fuel economy in excess of 30mpg (about 7.8 liters per 100km).
“The noise intensity is 40 percent less than our 2.4L direct-injected engine, which was named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines. Engineers also tuned the 2.5L to deliver more of its torque at lower rpm, giving the Malibu a stronger feel at launch and during on-demand maneuvers, such as passing or accelerating on a freeway entrance ramp,” added said Mike Anderson, global chief engineer.
