GM Adds Second Shift at Oshawa Plant, Brings Back 700 Jobs

GM will add a second shift to the Oshawa Car Assembly Plant's flexible manufacturing line to support the production of the new Camaro Convertible and the Buick Regal which will begin in early 2011.

We’re really excited to be adding production of the all-new Buick Regal alongside the hot-selling Chevrolet Camaro at the Oshawa Car Assembly Plant,” said Marc Comeau, GM of Canada’s vice-president of sales, service and marketing. “With the plant’s longstanding reputation for quality, and the Regal’s award-winning European roots, customers are in for a top quality ride, unlike anything they’ve seen from Buick before.

The new 2011 Regal is a midsize sedan based on the award-wining Opel Insignia, the 2009 “European Car of the Year”, bringing European design and technological know-how to the North American market. The Regal joins the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain becoming the third new vehicle built in Canada, as part of the agreement with the Canadian and Ontario Governments.

The addition of the second shift will return up to 700 jobs to the Oshawa Car Plant and continues a string of good news for GM manufacturing in Canada.

A third shift is added on another assembly line at the Oshawa, Ontario, plant to increase production of the Chevrolet Equinox. The two shifts have saved more than 1,300 jobs at the plant and added more than 300 new employees, GM said. General Motors of Canada Limited has over 9,000 employees across the country and markets its products through Canada's largest automotive dealer network, which employs more than 23,000 people.
