Gigantic Aifix Model Kit of Ayrton Senna's F1 Car to Be Auctioned Off

The merit of amazing drive that was Ayrton Senna could very well have been put away in a forgotten drawer of motorsport history were it not for the ocumentary film "Senna" directed by Asif Kapadia, which has recently hit cinemas, depicting the life and death of the F1 legend. But this is rapidly becoming the year of “Senna”, and everybody is jumping onto the chance to highlight the greatness that brought to open-wheel racing.

The latest tribute comes not from the world of film, but from Airfix, a company that’s well known for across the world for its model kits of everything from boats to flying saucers.

A gigantic version of what looks like a sprue you get out of an Airfix box commemorates Ayrton’s s McLaren MP4/6 from his last season as World Champion... in true scale. This is one amazing sculptural tribute that could grace the walls of a the lucky, and presumably rich bidder that buys it at the International Car auctioneers COYS at their Nurburgring sale in Germany on August 13th.

“I was really impressed with the Senna sculpture. Such a clever idea and it really stands out as something really different. Often at race meetings Senna would fly his radio controlled helicopter. He was really into models and he would have appreciated the concept,” said Dennis, who was team manager in Ayrton’s formative years, when the sculpture was unveiled on Saturday July 16th at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire when COYS hosted its annual Concours d’Elegance.

“It will be sold at our auction at the Nurburgring on August 13th,” said Chris Routledge from COYS. “It really is a fantastic sculpture that would not be out of place in a design or motor museum or on the wall of a corporate office. We believe that it will sell for between £30,000 and £50,000.”
