FOTA Agrees to Double Diffuser Ban for 2011

The controversial double diffusers will be officially banned from the Formula One championship starting the 2011 season. The news was disclosed by British magazine Autosport's official website, citing sources close to the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA).

Shortly after the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) announced some reorganizational changes for the upcoming season, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) summoned the members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for a meeting on Thursday to discuss new aerodynamic rules for the 2011 season.

Since the majority of the 2010 cars will be a progression of the last year's machines (the majority of which were fitted with double diffusers), the ban will only be effective as of 2011 onwards.

It is understood that the teams approved a requirement that the diffuser surface must be continuous on its inboard section from the start of 2011. This prevents the use of the controversial 'slots' that were key to making the double diffuser work,” said the report from Autosport.

Usually, the technical changes to the Formula One rulebook have to be approved by the FIA only after the FOTA had given their go-ahead on the new measures. However, since the TWG already approved the new rules, it is expected that the FIA will easily pass them for the 2011 season.

Additionally, the same Autosport publication revealed that some new aerodynamic tweaks in the rulebook will help the 2011 cars score lap times some 2 seconds faster, as compared to the current scores on the time sheets. However, these rules will be presented and fully explained by the FIA through the 2010 season.
