Former NASCAR Driver Found Dead

Sad news for the fans of Kevin Grubb. Henrico County police are investigating the finding of the former NASCAR driver's corpse in an area motel room.

According to NASCAR, authorities said personnel at the Alpine Motel discovered the young men’s body in his room Wednesday, at about 11 a.m. Investigators did not make any speculations on the cause of death, but officials said there doesn't appear to be anything unusual or suspicious at the scene.

Kevin Grubb, 31, was the younger brother of former American NASCAR driver Wayne Grubb. He made his national touring series debut on Sept. 5, 1996, in the Truck Series race at Richmond.

His first Nationwide Series start was May 10, 1997, at Loudon. He finished with 10 top-five finishes and 32 top-10s in 174 Nationwide Series races and also made eight starts in the Truck Series.

At the time of his sudden death, He was under suspension from NASCAR competition due to two violations in NASCAR's substance abuse policy. NASCAR's Substance Abuse Policy allows NASCAR to administer drug tests virtually anytime, anywhere, based only on "reasonable suspicion." There is no driver's union to prevent such tests.

Grubb failed a substance abuse test in March 2004 and was inactive until June 2006 when he was reinstated by NASCAR. One of the conditions of his reinstatement was random, unannounced drug tests, a condition to which he agreed.

He participated in five Busch events before being suspended indefinitely on September 11, 2006, when he refused to take a drug test following a second-lap crash at Richmond.

The next day, Grubb claimed that his failure to take the test was a result of confusion following a concussion suffered during the race, and offered to take a drug test at that time.

He was cleared by the infield hospital following the crash, but was diagnosed with a concussion the next day at a local hospital. He claimed no memory of the refusal to submit to a drug test.
