Only a rumor, huh? At least this what Luca di Montezemolo said some time ago when asked by the media whether Fiat is indeed interested in buying the German ailing brand Opel. Well, it appears that the Italian automaker, who recently joined forced with Chrysler, is now planning to buy Opel, according to a report issued by the LaStampa newspaper.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is now in charge to fight for Opel, as Magna is also thought to be interested in the German brand, according to some media reports last weeks.
"Now we have to concentrate on Opel. They are our perfect partner," Marchionne was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source, explaining that after forming the alliance with Chrysler, Opel has become the new target. "The objective is to strengthen Fiat and give Chrysler a chance to clean itself up," he commented on the recently-signed agreement.
Marchionne has become one of the key officials in the latest weeks, mostly thanks to reports surrounding the Fiat - Chrysler alliance but also following rumors regarding a potential deal with Opel.
He always stated that Chrysler is a main target for the Italian automaker, hinting that a potential deal between the two could help it expand the company's coverage in the United States but also help the American automaker stay in business.
"I like Chrysler in its totality," he said a two weeks ago. "I see no reason why it cannot happen," Marchionne added, explaining that Chapter 11 would not be an impediment to complete the partnership. "I can only confirm our unwavering commitment to get this transaction done. We see benefits to both Fiat and to Chrysler."
