In the United States, recalls are announced by an agency called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In the Land Down Under, the equivalent to that is the ACCC, which has informed that close to 4,000 Fiat 500 city cars must make a pitstop at any authorized Fiat service departments.
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission tells that "Fiat 500 models within a certain VIN range" are included in recall number 5839. Specifically, Chrysler Australia Pty Ltd will be fixing an estimated 3,869 units of the Cinquecento, all of them manufactured between 2010 and 2014. If you're to take registration numbers into consideration, that adds up to almost three quarters of all 500s sold in Australia in the aforementioned period.

As for the defect, Fiat Chrysler Australia has told ACCC that "due to a potential interference of the wiring under the dashboard with the steering column, the wiring might wear out in time." That apparently minor wiring defect is believed to increase the risk of an accident, especially if the power steering or another vital vehicle control function is affected by the premature wear and tear of the wiring.

Fortunately enough, Fiat Chrylser Group's Australian division hasn't received any report of the defect in question from Aussie owners of the affected Fiat 500 population. Just like we've mentioned before, authorized dealer service departments will handle the fixing at no-cost for the Italian city car's owner.

If you don't want to waste time and wait for the postman to deliver a notification letter regarding the safety recall, then we advise you to contact your nearest Fiat dealership and schedule a service visit.
