FIA Confirm Standard-Engine Plans for 2010

Despite most manufacturers inside Formula 1 expressed their disapproval on introducing standard engines into the sport, the International Automobile Federation is very much considering the option for the near future. More, this seems like the main issue on FIA's agenda in their war against increased costs in Formula 1. A statement released by FIA on the matter confirmed rumors that standard engines might be implemented as soon as 2010.

“The FIA intends to ensure that all engines including those supplied by the tenderer are within 1% (engine power of other units) and that they remain within 1% throughout the engine's life. This being the case, it becomes irrelevant that a team which chooses to build the engine itself might do expensive work on the engine,” said the statement, referring to the compatibility of a future standard engine to each team.

Also, just to let everyone know they mean business, the FIA has announced the deadline for private companies to submit their applications for either standard engines or standardized transmission systems. By November 7, Max Mosley should have his table full of proposals and potential manufacturers. It has been already confirmed that none of the current F1 manufacturers will submit such an application.

Also, if FIA decides that each manufacturer would be allowed to make their own engines, there will be strict rules to ensure they will not gain any advantages in terms of performance over other teams.

The statement from FIA comes only a few days after Toyota warned Max Mosley that they will reconsider their position inside the sport should standardized engines become part of Formula One from 2010 to 2012. Also, only hours after FIA's announcement today, Ferrari have taken the same position, saying that they will most likely quit Formula 1 if they have to submit to a standard engine rule in the near future.
