Ferrari Bringing Greener Version of 458 to Geneva

You probably all know by now that Ferrari is bringing the new FF shooting-brake to the Geneva stage this year. But the Italian supercar maker will also field a greener version of the 458 Italia. According to AutoGuide, this will feature the HELE (High Emotion, Low Emission) system that, as you might have guessed already, cuts emissions and improves fuel economy without sacrificing performance. We are not talking about a “eat your greens hybrid”, as Jeremy Clarkson calls them, but the regular V8-powered monster that has been given a thorough going-over. The system, which made its debut in the California, cuts emissions by as much as 23 percent in that model. This is largely due to an added start-stop system, adaptive transmission controls that allow for limited access to power in certain driving conditions, an efficient fuel pump, engine fan, plus a variable electronic air conditioning compressor that cuts the amount of power used by 35 percent. No official statement have been made regarding how many HELE systems will be incorporated in the 458 Italia, or how much greener it will get thanks to them. Ferrari’s supercar is already a major leap forward when it comes to cutting emissions. Despite the fact that the new engine is significantly more powerful than the previous V8, the Ferrari 458 Italia produces just 320 g/km of CO2, while fuel consumption is 13.7 l/100 km or 17.1 mpg on the combined cycle. autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
