Felipe Massa Won't Race on Sunday

After the terrible accident from Saturday’s qualifying, the Brazilian F1 driver underwent surgery last night at the AEK Hospital in Budapest. The 28-year-old won’t take part in today’s race as he will remain under observations at a nearby Budapest trauma hospital.

Doctors reviewed yesterday the images form the Telephoto lens images of the trackside, and took the decision that immediate surgery was necessary. After just finishing a hot qualifying lap in the Q2 session, Felipe was hit be a lose spring that came off from Barrichello’s BrawnGP car.

The spring was supposedly a piece from the shock absorbing dampers on the rear suspension of Barrichello’s car. With the help of the trackside Telephoto lens, images revealed how the spring hit Massa’s upper left front side of the helmet.

The impact was so powerful that it lifted the 28-year-old Brazilian from his seat, as seen in the super slow motioned recording. The incident left Massa unconscious and with an open cut on his face. According to auto123.com, the same photos also show injury to his left eye, which was swollen and closed.

Ferrari’s team manager, Stefano Domenicali confirmed for the Italian television that Felipe won’t race on Sunday. The team boss proceeded in revealing Massa had indeed suffered a cut on his forehead with “a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion".

These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care," said Domenicali in the same statement.

Update: Felipe's surgery went according to plan and and the outcome of the procedure was positive, said the latest press release on the driver's official website.
