F1 Car Doing Donuts, the Thermal Camera Hot View

Especially at a young age, many dream about having superpowers and fantasize on what such capabilities could be used for. Today we want to show you what it would be like to watch a Formula One car in action, the thermal imaging way.

Red Bull’s RB8 racer recently put on a show, with the thing literally letting go of its usual “stay on the grip” game. Among others, the RB8 baked a couple of donuts at the GAMMA Racing Day 2014.

Aside from the obvious smokey fest that was offered to the spectators on the Dutch track (the even was held on the TT Circuit Assen), Red Bull also invited an... infrared camera to capture the shenanigan.

Any footage of an F1 car smoking its tires would be hot, but this one takes the game to a whole new level. You can easily notice which areas of the car reach the highest temperatures and you can even see how the rubber laid on the tarmac gradually loses temperature.

The engine glows like a giant petrol-burning firefly, while the tires, especially the rear ones, could easily trick you into believing they are on fire. The resulting clip also includes standard footage, so you can compare the two. As for the driver, well... he was cool.

Come to think of it, this is somewhat close to what a vampire bat or a snake would see F1 donuts. Or, why not, it’s a pretty good portrait of a Predator’s take on the matter (think sci-fi).
