eBay Boosts GM New Car Sales

The partnership General Motors signed with online bidding website eBay appears to be working as the former bankrupt US automaker is seeing an important sales boost in the domestic market through the online interface. GM's dealers based in California received approximately 2,400 orders for new cars since the company rolled out the online campaign, just-auto.com wrote citing a GM spokesman.

But more importantly, Americans showed quite a high interest for GM's new online shop, with around 632,000 visitors browsing the newly-launched store hosted by eBay. And the carmaker expects even better figures, as eBay has millions of visitors per month, according to figures given by representatives of the website.

"With 12 million individual car shoppers visiting our site every month, eBay Motors has unique insight into how people prefer to buy their cars," said Rob Chesney, vice president, eBay Motors. "Through this program, we are helping GM dealers to extend their physical showroom while at the same time delivering to our buyers the great deals and broad selection they expect from eBay."

225 dealers registered for the scheme and are selling 2008, 2009 and 2010 cars, crossovers and trucks. There will be up to 20,000 new GM vehicles available for online buyers, General Motors said in a release.

"Together with eBay Motors, GM and our dealers are reinventing the car-buying experience for our California customers," said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president of U.S. sales. "As the dealer showroom expands from the parking lot to the laptop, this makes it easier for a customer to browse available new-car inventory, make an offer, buy it now, or send a message asking for more information from a dealer - all at the customer's convenience."
