The world is littered with custom auto projects, if you know where to look, and they range from the most awesome to the strangest, ugliest and most abominable. This Dodge Double Header is partly unexpected, partly odd but equally impressive.
Perhaps even more surprising is the fact that it’s included in the Indy 2020 event from Mecum Auctions house, which will take place between July 10 and 18. Mecum is usually the place to go for the rarest, most elegant and priciest pieces of automobile history, which is what makes a combination of a 1981 Dodge and a same-year Plymouth an odd appearance.
Indeed, the Dodge Double Header is a custom car that brings together the front end of two differently named but similar cars, a 1981 Dodge Colt and a 1981 Plymouth Champ. On their own, chances are these cars would hardly catch your eye, but as they are, they sure make for a visually arresting sight.
The Dodge Double Header is part of the Dallas Hawkins collection and, as strange as it might seem in writing, the photos show it’s actually a nice, albeit confusing car. For what it’s worth, it’s clear someone invested a lot of time and effort into making this project a nearly-flawless one.
Details are few, but the auction house notes it packs two 1.6L 4-cylinder engines under the two hoods and can be driven from either end. That last part should up the appeal of the custom project considerably. There are also two 4-speed manual transmissions and 6-spoke alloy wheels, but no word on total mileage on either car.
The body has been painted red and a black vinyl roof covering was added. The interior matches the exterior, with one side mirroring the other: black interior with red accents on one side, and red interior with black accents on the other. You have to appreciate the attention to detail and symmetry, as well as what could be described as a subtle sense of humor.
If you’re in the market for a unique and potentially very confusing (but still very stylish) car, Mecum is offering the Dodge Double Header with no reserve.
