Dainese is thoroughly testing their new D-Air Thorax chest airbag protection, a natural and most welcome expansion of their D-Air Street program.
While the existing armor only offered protection for the neck area and shoulders, carefully designed airbags now extend across the sternum and lower and lateral areas of the ribcage.

Due to the increased volume of the inflatable area, the gas canister will also undergo an increase in size, but this is only a minor detail. Dainese claims the suit will need the same time to inflate, around 45 milliseconds, and it will be able to absorb about 85% pf the impact force.

In case the upgraded airbag armor works in real life as engineering estimations say it does. We might be looking at a very nice new appearance in the industry.

Dainese will embed the D-Air Thorax technology in the racing suit line first, with a move to the street level expected in 2014.

At the same time, those buying the D-Air Racing suit are said to be eligible for a two-year maintenance subscription for a nominal fee, guaranteeing free replacement for the airbag and canister after each impact.
