Daimler US Hybrid Buses Sales Surpass 3,000

The American division of German manufacturer Daimler announced today it managed to brake yet another mark for its hybrid buses: so far, North America bought over 3,000 Orion VII diesel-electric hybrids, making Daimler the first manufacturer to achieve this.

"Daimler remains committed to leading the hybrid bus market worldwide, and our subsequent orders in North America is evidence of the confidence our customers have in our buses and coaches," Hartmut Schick, Daimler Buses head said in a release. "Being the leader is a responsibility that we take seriously and remain committed to delivering leading edge and reliable products for our customers."

The Orion VII diesel-electric hybrid bus uses HybriDrive propulsion system, comprising of a 6.7l Cummins diesel engine, a generator, an electric motor, and the Lithium-ion energy storage system. The diesel engine is designed to operate at constant speeds, meaning the hybrid is as efficient and as clean as they get. Constant speeds are achieved by accelerating/decelerating the speed of the electric motor, not the diesel's.

"The Orion brand has historically been known for dependability and reliability, and the Orion VII hybrid continues this tradition of excellence," Patrick Scully, Daimler Buses North America chief commercial officer added. "As our experience grows and technology continues to develop, we're confident our hybrid buses will continue to exceed customer expectations and outperform our competition."

So far, there are 2,200 hybrid buses in service in North America, while another 850 await deliveries in New York, Seattle, Houston, Ottawa and Puerto Rico. Out of the 2,200 active hybrids, 1,250 operate in New York.
