Couple Drives 900 Miles With Kids in The Trunk, Dogs in The Backseat

One man and woman from Arizona have a very bad case of skewed priorities: they took a 900-mile drive, from Arizona to Casper, Wyoming with two children in the trunk of the car, so their two German Shepherds could ride in the backseat.

Michael J. Fee, 63, of Peoria, and Amber L. Freudenstein, 32, both from Arizona, were arrested after a third party went to the police to report that the children had confided in them about making the 900-mile ride in the trunk of the car earlier this week.

The kids are about 6 and 10 years old, respectively. When police first questioned the man and the woman, they didn’t even mention the dogs, but they came up later during the questioning.

Yesterday, at the Natrona County Circuit Court, both Fee and Freudenstein pleaded guilty to two counts each of child endangering, a misdemeanor, The Casper Star-Tribune reports. They admitted in court that they had locked the kids in the trunk, citing as reason for their decision the lack of sufficient space inside the vehicle. Clearly, putting the dogs in the trunk or, better yet, leaving them at home, was never an option they considered.

In Utah, one of the children was let out of the trunk and allowed to travel until the final destination in the front footwell.

The two also planned on making the trip back to Arizona the same way at the end of this week, but the publication says they were planning on taking “3 different kids” with them, and place them too in the trunk. The publication doesn’t mention whether the children were any relation to the culprits.

“I tried to make things as safe as I could for them,” Fee told the court at the hearing. “It wasn’t anything malicious.”

He and Freudenstein will spend the next 30 days in prison.
