Coulthard Turned Down Ferrari's No 2 Driver Offer

Former Grand Prix racer David Coulthard revealed in his latest column for the Daily Telegraph that he turned down the chance to become Michael Schumacher's teammate at Ferrari in the past. Of course, he didn't say when exactly that happened – after Eddie Irvine's departure or after Rubens Barrichello's – but emphasized the fact that he didn't want to turn into a lieutenant driver in F1.

In the same column, the Scot insisted that he doesn't think Red Bull is treating its drivers unequally this season, despite the front wing saga at Silverstone. According to the former Red Bull racer, a team could choose two directions towards the world title: the Ferrari/Schumacher way in the past, when one driver would be openly supported for the title from the get go (“morally dubious” according to DC), or the Red Bull way.

Consequently, DC doesn't agree with Mark Webber's outspoken criticism of his team following his win in Great Britain, saying that it could lead to some major differences with the Red Bull organization.

Mark clearly feels he can gain more leverage by going public and trying to shame the team whenever he feels hard done by. It is a risky strategy. If it goes wrong, the relationship with the team could sour irreparably. If it comes off, he could consolidate his position, attract public sympathy and be remembered as a steely champion who battled against the odds to win his title,” said Coulthard in the column.

Coulthard and Webber were teammates at Red Bull for two seasons, before the former decided to retire from F1 racing. Talking about Red Bull's strategy this season, the Scottish racer admitted it's hard to implement once you have two drivers battling for the world title.

The second (route) is the fairer system but incredibly volatile and difficult to put into practice,” concluded the Scot.
