The fourth-generation Toyota Prius family is about to gain an all-new member at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Cue what appears to be the 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid. Can we all agree that it looks great for a car with plenty of eco credentials? Thank you.
Sure, I admit that the Toyota badge and the styling aren’t as alluring as what Tesla offers on the Model S, Model X, and soon-to-debut Model 3, but then again, comparing Tesla to Toyota is like comparing apples and oranges. The detail that defines the 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid is the shape of the taillights.

Visual changes continue at the front, where the fascia differs from that of the regular Prius liftback. Grille, headlights, fog lights, daytime running lights, almost everything is different as in more pleasing to the eye compared to what the Prius hybrid has to offer. The Japanese publication that leaked the images featured in the gallery has yet to get its hands on a pic of the interior of the 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, though I have a feeling the carmaker hasn’t altered anything at all. Fingers crossed the real deal will look exactly like the car pictured above.

It isn't known at the present moment whether the plug-in hybrid variant will be designated as such, more so if you consider that Toyota has trademarked “Prius Prime” last summer. What else is there to talk about the Prius PHV, then? Well, how about a range almost twice as long as the unpluggable version of the Prius?

The Japanese media reports an electric range of up to 50 kilometers or 31 miles according to the JC08 test cycle. Surely enough, the U.S. EPA will have a different opinion, but don’t expect anything less than 20 miles (32 kilometers). It’s unlikely that Toyota will detail everything about the Prius PHV in New York, which is why we’ll have to wait until the model’s JDM launch in October to find out what’s what.

In the meantime, here are some of the Prius Plug-In Hybrid's rumored specifications:

• Engine: 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXZ Atkinson cycle with 105 PS (77 kW) and 147 Nm (108 lb-ft)
• Electric motor maximum output: 90 PS (66 kW)
• Length, width and height: 4,550 mm × 1,770 mm × 1,490 mm
• Wheelbase: 2,700 mm
• Weight: 1,350 kilograms (2,975 pounds)
