Confirmed: Hyundai Equus in the US in 2010

Speculation on whether Hyundai will launch the Equus in the United States finally comes to an end. The South Korean manufacturer yesterday confirmed it will indeed bring the premium luxury sedan in the United States, mostly thanks to the success recorded by the 2009 Genesis that demonstrated Hyundai the Equus could perform well in America.

"We showed the car at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, and the response was fantastic," says John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO. "Since then, we've had a fleet traveling around the country, capturing input from our dealers and consumers. Here, too, the response was extraordinarily positive, and similar to the market reaction to the award-winning Genesis, so we've decided to bring it to the U.S."

Details on the model to be launched in the United States are still unavailable but the South Korean carmaker says it will most likely become available in late 2010. The car will be based on the premium rear-wheel-drive architecture just like the Genesis.

Pricing details, specifications and all information on the American Equus are expected to surface in the upcoming months.

Rumors regarding the US launch of the new premium luxury sedan saw daylight earlier this year, with a Hyundai official confirming the company was considering such an option.

"You didn't hear it from me. But you wouldn't be far off if you said the car was coming to the United States. Our chairman wants it," an unnamed source commented on at that time. "We have modest expectations," spokesman Oles Gadacz said in mid May when talking about hopes on the US version of Equus.
