Chevrolet Says "Nein" to Frankfurt

GM is slowly but surely slipping the public's mind as an automotive manufacturer, as its battle for survival grows ever stronger. Using pretexts such as "we have nothing new to present at the show", GM has decided not to bring one of its "good' brands to the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show to be held in September.

"We have already launched the Cruze compact car and showed the Spark at Geneva, so there is nothing brand new to show at Frankfurt, Chevrolet is not going to have a stand at Frankfurt" Marc Kempe, Chevrolet Europe's communications director was quoted as saying by Autonews.

It is true that Chevrolet has never been an European favorite and the latest sales figures further point to that fact. Given a helping hand by the economic crisis, Cxhevrolet registered 17.6 percent lower sales in the first three months of 2009, meaning 42,819 units sold.

"Everybody observing the economic situation at present will appreciate the situation. We have to think very carefully about the investments we make," added the official. Still, the American manufacturer will go to Germany with some of its other brands, including Hummer, Cadillac and the over discussed Saab.

The event in September seems to be deserted by more and more of its former exhibitors. Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi are amongst those who have already announced they will not attend the event.

All of them blamed the crisis as the main deterrent into showing up. Honda's statement describes the situation the best: "Honda is trying to reduce every possible cost in various areas including manufacturing, sales and marketing activities to strengthen its business constitution to overcome the tough climate of today."
