General Motors has announced plans to take on electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors via its Cadillac brand.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Washington, GM chairman and CEO told The Detroit News that Cadukkac will compete head-to-head with Tesla, who has turned a profit this year thanks to its Model S four-door sedan.
“If you want to compete head-to-head with Tesla, and we ultimately will, you want to do it with a Cadillac. We’ll sell more (Chevrolet) Volts and lose less money on the Volts than they’ll lose on the (Tesla) Model S,” Akerson said.
However, GM’s boss added that he remains skeptical that electric vehicles can sell large numbers in the United States anytime soon: “I’m not convinced that an all-electric car is the panacea that I think the American public wants.”
