BYD has just launched its Explorer NO. 1 on its maiden voyage. Capable of carrying an impressive 7,000 cars on board, its first roll-on/roll-off carrier left the Chinese shore. It is BYD's way of ramping up exports.
BYD is the world's leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles and power batteries. Therefore, they have to prove their worth worldwide, expand overseas, and push to gain new territories. In order to do that, they have now sent the Explorer No. 1, with a capacity of 7,000 cars, on its maiden voyage. The cargo carrier is bound for Europe, but the exact number of cars that it currently carries has not been announced.

The vessel will help the auto giant boost its sales across the world. BYD exported 242,765 new energy vehicles in 2023, which means an impressive year-on-year growth of 334.2 percent. The total production figures exceeded 9 million units, with 3.02 million units being NEVs. The numbers solidify BYD's position as the world's best-selling automaker of new energy vehicles.

Wang Junbao, General Manager of BYD, states that the industry leader is thus forging a new epoch for Chinese automakers on the international stage.

The vessel was officially delivered to BYD by its manufacturer, China International Marine Containers Group Co., on January 10 before starting on its journey from Xiaomo International Logistics Port in Shenzen, China, marking a major chapter in the maritime transportation of cars.

The ship had completed its inaugural seven-day sea trial at the end of November and beginning of December, sailing in Yantai.

The roll-on/roll-off Explorer No. 1 measures 199.9 meters (655.8 feet) in length, has a width of 38 meters (124.6 feet), a design draft of 9 meters (29.5 feet), and a design speed of 18.5 knots (34.3 kph or 21.3 mph).

These figures turn it into the largest of its kind in the world. It features a futuristic dual-fuel LNG (liquefied natural gas), but also a conventional fuel propulsion system.

The vessel features energy-saving functions, energy-efficient devices, drag-reducing technology, and anti-fouling paint.

Seven more such vessels are expected to see the light of day over the next two years. All of them will integrate BYD's energy storage battery tech and shaft generator systems with a sole purpose: a greener maritime transportation. The Explorer No. 1 is the first to receive the technology.

Two such ships will be manufactured during the first stage. BYD is the owner of both. A total of six ships have been confirmed, with two more as option orders. The estimated cost of each mammoth vessel is of nearly 5 billion yuan, which translates into over $704 million.

BYD is currently selling cars on six continents, in over 70 countries and regions worldwide, reaching more than 400 cities.
