Branson, Fernandes Hit Back at Ferrari for Outburst

It didn’t take long before some of the highly ranked figures of Formula One responded to Ferrari’s attacks over the newly-entered teams in the Great Circus. Obviously, the first guys that felt the need to hit back at the Scuderia for their "anti-new teams" comments last week were the ones managing the operations of Virgin Racing and Lotus F1.

Until not so long ago, Sir Richard Branson – the man who pumped money into the title-winning Brawn GP last year and formed his own team in the series in 2010 – and Tony Fernandes – team principal of Lotus F1 Team – challenged each other for the highest finisher in the 2010 season. Being that each of them owns a private airline company, the loser would go on to work as a stewardess in the other’s private airplane for a whole day.

However, with both of them being attacked so rough by Ferrari via the Italian manufacturer’s official site, they joined efforts and slammed the comments issued through the “Horse Whisperer” column.

I think it was a pity that they (Ferrari) were resistant to the budget cap and I think it is foolish actually. I think the one thing the Virgin team will prove is that you can have a really good racing team, running very fast, within a very tight budget,” said Branson while present at the Barcelona testing this week.

Wonder what Ferrari would be like on Virgin's budget,” was Fernandes’ answer via his twitter account.

Last but not least, the very man who turned Ferrari into an empire over the last decade and a half, Michael Schumacher, also positioned himself outside the “Ferrari box.”

Actually I think they are doing reasonably well. I think for teams that have started completely from scratch I think they are doing a very good job,” said Schu.
