Another day, another potentially deadly problem arrises in the world of car recalls. BMW has just issued a statement saying that a number of current generation X5 SUVs could suffer from power steering problems.
As a result, certain models between the 2009 and 2012 model years of the X5 xDrive 35d will have to be recalled to fix a problem that potentially causes loss of power steering. The problem stems from an engine belt idler pulley bolt that can loosen and break with time.
If the bolt of the pulley breaks, power steering will be lost, which BMW says could result in a crash.
The recall is quite substantial, as 29,800 units in the US are affected. Starting in January 2013, owner will be notified and and the bolt will be replaced free of charge. To find out if your car is affected call BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
