BMW’s X1 is a vehicle with a bit of an identity crisis. On the one side, it wants to be a crossover, but it will never live up to your off-roading expectations. And while it can be economical, its driving position is no higher than a some hatches, and so you don’t get the high vantage point you want from an SUV in the city.
2012 is supposed to bring with it the arrival of a facelift for the smallest X BMW makes. It’s going to be the usual bumpers and lights makeover, but that’s not all. You see, for a while now, BMW has refused the X1 access to the US market, since it encroached on X3 territory. But they will allow it access now, and they will also bring a new flagship model from M Performance.
According xbimmers.com, the X1 M35i xDrive will pack all-mighty 320 horsepower 3.0-liter mated exclusively to an AWD system.
But that’s not the only model coming to the us, as the Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) will also see the introduction of a couple of diesels. The first is likely going to be an 18d EfficientDynamics with sDrive, judging by the 120 g/km of CO2 it’s supposed to emit. The other is a 25d xDive, equipped with the 214 2.0-liter diesel with winPower Turbo technology.
