BMW Won’t Compete in Formula E as Long as the Mid-Race Swap Is in Place

BMW has been absent from any sport involving the word ‘Formula’ for quite some time. They retired from Formula 1 a long time ago, and they never entered Formula E in the first place. People are starting to ask more and more questions about why that is and the answers aren’t all that convincing.
According to Autosport, the German company won’t enter the eco-friendly venue anytime soon. The reason they invoke? The mid-race car swaps, apparently.

“An issue that needs to be addressed is the change of car," said BMW Motorsport chief, Jens Marquardt, who also said that the end of two-car races "would be a condition for our potential direct involvement. If you look at public discussions of electric mobility, the issue of reach is very important."

That seems to be an excuse for us, to be frank. After all, if all other teams abide by the same rules, why would it be such a big inconvenience? Furthermore, it would help them market their eco-friendly cars more if they post impressive results on the track, of course.

According to officials from Formula E, there is a program in place that seeks to remove this swap by season five which would make 2018-2019 the moment when we will see the results of their efforts.

At the moment, however, BMW would be one of the very few carmakers in the world that would be directly involved in the environmentally-friendly motorsport. That’s because only Renault and Citroen are currently also partaking in it. In the meantime, the BMW i8 acts as the safety car for the races and the i3 is used as a medical one.
