BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Revealed

We were reporting last week on a teaser released by BMW showing what appeared to be the taillight of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept. Now, with just two weeks before its official introduction to the public at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the German carmaker has revealed the technology and design details of its "JOY defines the future" vehicle. BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics sportscar proves to be much more than the teaser left us to believe, combining a sporty design with the BMW ActiveHybrid and EfficientDynamics technology. The four-seater concept comes with gullwing doors opening up to the side. “Innovative, weight-optimised door kinematics makes entering the car at both front and rear convenient and very easy,” a company’s statement reads. Furthermore, the car’s interior uses natural materials, with the roof and door insets made of polycarbonate glass that automatically become darker as a function of incoming light. Moving on the technology details, the full-hybrid Vision is powered by a three-cylinder turbodiesel and two electric motors. The unit is capable of developing an overall output of 262 kW/356 hp and a maximum torque 800 Nm/590 lb-ft. The car is equipped with all-wheel drive, featuring an electric motor on both the front and rear axle. Thanks to these settings, the Vision EfficientDynamics goes from naught to sixty in 4.8 seconds, and is capable of reaching a maximum electronically-limited speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). As for the fuel consumption, BMW reports the car recorded 3.76 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions of 99 grams/km in the EU test cycle. Using a Brake Energy Regeneration technology, the car is able to cover a distance of approximately 50 km/31 miles in the electric mode alone.
