We’ve already mentioned BMW’s brilliant new bi-turbo straight-six petrol engine as being one of the best and cleverest new performance-orriented engines currently available on the market today, and it’s excellently suited to the 1-Series M coupe’s balanced chassis and low overall weight.
It’s not only us who appreciate this engine, it having won the coveted Engine of the Year Award for the ‘2.5-liter to 3.0-liter’ category at this year’s event. It has a power output of 340 hp at 7000 rpm and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque spread over a very wide range, between 1500 and 4500 rpm, making it extremely elastic.
Such a linear power and torque delivery is possible courtesy of BMW’s twin turbo set-up, with one turbo working to give the car more torque over as wide a range as possible, whereas the other gives it more poke at the high end, thus covering the entire usable rev range of the car, from 1500 all the way to 7000 rpm - a wonderful feat of modern engineering!
