BMW Police Car Shows Up on the Nurburgring. Is It Enforcing Speed Limits?

Not too long ago, Nurburgring officials announced that the world famous track will be enforcing speed limits in certain areas in order to try and reduce the number of accidents that claim lives on it. The news was received with heavy hearts by enthusiasts world wide.
Some even went as far as to claim that it was all done as a concentrated effort from the Germans to keep other manufacturers away from their records. While I don’t personally think that’s the case, I still can’t agree with the fact that a race track has speed limits on it, let alone the Nurburgring.

As you might know, I’m a bit of a BMW fan as well and since the Bavarians have such a special relationship with the Green Hell, this affect me and them on a different level.

Even so, no matter how many angry editorials we write and how many conspiracy theories come out, the situation won’t change anytime soon, that’s for sure. Related or not, recently a BMW 5 Series Touring police car was spotted on the track for some reason.

In case you didn’t know, the Nurburgring was originally built as part of the German highway system. This was a long long time ago and it’s no longer the case but ordinary citizens were actually able to drive on it to get where they were going. We can only imagine that police cars did the same in case they needed to.

These days, anyone can get on it but only during the so-called Touristenfahrten days which are reserved solely for amateurs. You pay a small fee and can drive your personal car on the track at the same time as a couple hundred other people. It’s a dangerous thing to do but it beats never getting to experience the Nurburgring at all, I guess.

As far as I can tell, this police car could’ve very well be chasing a car on the track as they did seem to be in a hurry. This was shot during one of those ‘tourist days’ since the Opel Astra OPC in front of it seems like a private car and not one from a particular manufacturer, out for testing purposes.

Either way, we’re betting the driver of the Astra wasn’t all too pleased to see a police car in his rearview mirror on the track... What better country for this to happen though than Germany where police rides next to you at 155 mph?
