Expecting to make a lasting impression on the automotive industry with the launch of the Megacity line of vehicles in 2013, German manufacturer BMW is currently weighing its options regarding possible alternative production sites for the model to be developed by Project i.
As announced earlier this year, the bulk of the Megacity line of vehicles will be manufactured in Germany, at the carmaker's Leipzig plant (the same facility where the ActiveE and Vision Efficient Dynamics will spawn from). Currently, BMW is beginning to get the facility ready to receive the assembly lines needed to make the cars a reality.
Apparently, the German production hub might not be enough to satisfy BMW's appetite. According to BMWblog, citing German magazine Wattgehtab, soon after its launch in 2013 the model might get a dedicated production line in China.
There were no specific details provided, but BMW's Chinese head, Christoph Stark, confirmed that the close launch date for the model would allow BMW to observe the Chinese suppliers and resources, needed for possible production of the model there.
Before its official launch, the first Megacity vehicle will get to know the world during the 2012 London Olympics, an event to which BMW is official automotive partner.
Earlier today, news of BMW having registered the names for the future range of Megacity vehicles broke. According to the information available, BMW will slam onto the carbon fiber bodies of the cars the names i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9. There's no telling what the name of the first model will be, though...
