Mercedes has the S-Class to test all its new technologies on, but BMW does not choose its big boat of a car, the 7-Series, to do the same job. Instead, the Bavarians have the 5-Series, which is especially good to test its newly developed engines. They did it with the 3.0-liter biturbo that change the game when it came lag and they’re going to do it again with turbocharged diesels.
We’ve heard a lot of rumors about the arrival of a new tri-turbo six-cylinder diesel, which was originally expected to be dropped in the X3 M and shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, a new report from Driving-Fun says the tri-turbo super-diesel will debut with 381 horsepower in the M550d, a brand new range-topper for the 5-Series oil-burner.
What’s more, the 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque the meaty engine provides makes it a good alternative for the 550i model and its 407 horsepower.
The M550d will be offered not only in F10 sedan, but also in F11 estate configurations, and should debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. After that, the engine will be dropped into the X5 and X6 and probably even the X5 M sporty compact SUV we’ve been waiting to see for so long.
