Last week was quite interesting for the BMW M4, quite a number of new info about it surfacing on a variety of platform. The most important one, though, was about the time it takes the new M car to go around the Nurburgring.
In one of their traditional Super Tests, the guys from Sport Auto (that simply don’t play around when testing iconic cars) took the new M4 to the Green Hell to see exactly what it’s capable of. Well, in their hand, the new M car posted a time of 7 minutes 52 seconds which is pretty darn impressive, considering the conditions.

Speaking of which, we should mention that when the car was tracked, the air temperature was 15 Celsius while the asphalt temperature read 18 Celsius. The car was also fitted with Michelin Pilot Supersport tires, Ceramic Brakes and a 7-speed DCT transmission.

The numbers they got should point out that an even better time could be achieved with a different driver. The 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint was done in 4.2 seconds, 0.1 slower than what BMW is claiming, showing that there’s still room for improvement.

Even so, looking over the fastest laps set around the world-famous track, the M4 did a pretty good job. Compared to the Audi RS5, it’s 7 seconds faster, while the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe PP is 9 seconds behind on the same circuit. Sure, the two models are considerably older by now but it’s still an impressive difference. Compared to its predecessor, the E92 M3 Coupe, the M4 is 13 seconds faster, a mind-boggling number.

They guys also took the M4 around the Hockenheim Ring, a much shorter circuit, also extremely popular in Germany. Over here, the air temperature was rated at 19 degrees Celsius while the asphalt was even hotter, at 26 degrees. Over here, the M4 posted a time of 1 minute 12.8 seconds.

How does it compare? Well, the current M5 that has a considerable extra 130 HP and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque on its side posted a 0.6-second slower time, the C63 AMG PP was 0.8 seconds behind while the Audi RS5 Coupe was 1.5 seconds slower.

As we said in the beginning, these are not bad numbers at all, even though the rumors had it that the M4 could do the Ring in 7:45. Considering there wasn’t a professional driver behind the wheel and that the car wasn’t specially prepped for such a lap, we’re actually quite impressed. This is, after all, a car that you can also drive home in and go grocery shopping without shattering nearby windows or breaking your back.
