It may be sexy, but the BMW 6 Series is getting a bit old now that the 5 Series and 7 Series were refreshed from the ground up. Be that as it may, the 2018 model year 6er brings a handful of updates.
First things first, the 2018 BMW 6 Series will start rolling into U.S. dealerships this coming spring. Pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, though. In the meantime, however, the Bavarian automaker is proud to announce that the M Sport Package now includes carbon fiber trim that was previously reserved for the M6 Coupe, M6 Convertible, and the M6 Gran Coupe four-door sedan.
Bi-color 20-inch M lightweight alloy wheels are also on the menu, now featuring a double-spoke design and run-flat tires. Sonic Speed Blue metallic paint also makes the cut for those customers who wish to set their 6 Series apart from a visual standpoint. Of course, the most demanding customers can help themselves with BMW Individual features for that extra individuality.
Also in the United States of America for the 2018 model year, BMW will bring the G30-generation M550i xDrive. What essentially is a quicker sedan than the F10 M5 will reach dealerships in spring 2017, packing a 4.4-liter M Performance TwinPower Turbo V8 engine with 456 horsepower and 480 lb-ft from just 1,800 rpm. The go-faster variant of the 5er can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds dead, on to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
Those who aren’t too interested in 0 to 60 and the lot, the G30 5 Series can also play ball in the eco-friendly segment. Cue the 530e iPerformance, the greenest 2018 BMW 5 Series around. To be offered in sDrive RWD and xDrive AWD flavors, the 530e iPerformance is a plug-in hybrid with an overall output of 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the torque delivery of the electric motor, 60 mph is doable in a rather respectable 6.1 seconds.
BMW has yet to say anything about gas mileage or all-electric range, but the European-spec model could give us a clue about what's what: 2.0 l/100 km (117.6 U.S. mpg) and 45 kilometers (27 miles) of pure electric range.
